Why I’m against most for-profit schools

Okay, now let me start by saying: I’m not against all for-profit schools.

In case you’re wondering, a for-profit school is a college or training program run like a business. The main goal is to make money for owners or shareholders. Think medical assistant programs, pharmacy tech schools, fast-track IT certs, etc.

Now, some of these programs?
✅ Helpful.
✅ Straightforward.
✅ Great for students who want a quick certification, a hands-on trade, or a career shift without years of coursework.

But let’s not lie:
Some are misleading at the very least, others are outright shady. Too many are preying on students who don’t know what questions to ask.

Here's why I always say: Do your research!

A program promising you’ll be “career-ready” in 8 months…
Sounds good. But are you walking away with a $20K loan for something you could’ve done at your local community college for $2K?

If your program is offered at a community college or state school for a fraction of the cost why are you paying premium prices for the same certificate?

Now, don’t get me wrong.
Programs like welding, HVAC, or electrician training? Those don’t always live at traditional colleges. If your goal is to get in, get trained, and get paid, do what makes sense for you.

But if we’re talking:

• Medical billing

• Criminal justice

• Business admin

• General IT...

Or any other program a community college near you offers the same thing for 1/10th of the price?

Please, friend. Just look into your options.

It’s not about shaming your path, it’s about protecting your pockets and making informed choices.

I’ve worked inside these programs.
I’ve coached students through them.
And I’ve seen too many get burned because no one told them the full story.
